Face cleanser: gel, cream or micellar water?

Gessraha Pharmacies bag with a cleanser, serum, cream and cotton pads for a daily skincare routine

The wrong cleanser can spoil the best routine. A harsh cleanser tightens and irritates dry skin, while a creamy cleanser may not clean oily skin enough.

Availability varies between branches. Send the product name on WhatsApp before you come, and the pharmacist will tell you what's in stock and a suitable alternative.

Which one should you choose?

  • Oily skin: foaming gel morning and night.
  • Dry or sensitive skin: cream cleanser and lukewarm water.
  • Wearing make-up or heavy sunscreen: micellar water first, then your usual cleanser.

Twice a day is enough. Over-washing irritates the skin, even oily skin.

FAQ

Questions about this topic

Short answers to the most common questions.

Can micellar water replace a cleanser?

For sensitive or dry skin it may be enough in the morning. But if you wear make-up or sunscreen or your skin is oily, it's best to follow with a cleanser at night.

How many times a day should I wash my face?

Twice is enough: morning and night. Over-washing strips natural oils and can irritate the skin.

Can a cleanser for oily skin be used on dry skin?

Usually not, because it can tighten dry skin and make it drier. Choose a non-foaming cream cleanser.
